How long is a Beagle Channel tour?

Sailings from the tourist pier in Ushuaia run from two and a half hours to a day that mixes road and water. Which one fits depends on how far east you want to go and whether you want to set foot on land.

Beagle Channel tour duration, route by route

Everything turns on distance. The islets and the Les Eclaireurs lighthouse sit inside the first 20 km of water from the port, which is why those sailings finish in a morning. Isla Martillo and Estancia Harberton lie about 90 km east, so any trip that reaches the penguins has to spend hours getting there, by sea, by road, or both.

The durations below are the ones the operators and the municipal tourism board publish for each route. They cover the time from leaving the pier to coming back to it, so add your check-in on top. One operator asks passengers to reconfirm because departure times can change, which is worth doing for the duration too.

What fills the time on the short lighthouse sailings

On a 2 h 30 min to 3 hour run, the clock goes on three things: slow passes at Isla de los Pájaros and Isla de los Lobos for cormorants and sea lions, the turnaround at Les Eclaireurs about 20 km from Ushuaia, and the return over the same water. One operator's itinerary dates the lighthouse to 1920 and the nearby Monte Cervantes wreck to 1930, while a yacht itinerary gives 1919 for the light, so treat the year as the operator's version rather than settled.

The extra half hour to hour on the longer versions is time on land. One 3-hour cruise lands at Puerto Karelo in the Bridges Islands for a guided walk of about 20 minutes past Yámana shell middens, finishing at a viewpoint. The Isla H sailing and walk runs about 4 hours in total, of which roughly an hour is the island trail. The yacht format is 4 hours on 15-metre boats carrying 26 passengers, with Isla Alicia, Isla de los Pájaros, the lighthouse and a landing on Isla Bridges.

For a half day trip this is the slot to take. Four hours covers the islets, the lighthouse turn and time on your feet, and it still leaves the rest of the day in Ushuaia intact.

How long is a Beagle Channel tour to the penguin colony

Five to six hours on most sailings, and almost all of the extra time is spent on the water. The arithmetic is the distance: the colony sits about 90 km east of the pier, the only one in Tierra del Fuego, and its Magellanic and Gentoo penguins are there from October to April, with king penguins turning up only now and then. One operator lists its penguin navigation at about 5 hours with departures at 09:00 or 15:00; another lists 5 h 30 min to 6 hours; a boat-only version runs 5 hours on a catamaran carrying 168 to 195 passengers and sails October to March. The municipal tourism board also lists a 4-hour penguin sailing by a different company, departing 10:00 and 15:00. Check the duration on the day you book, since each company publishes its own.

None of those hours is spent on the island. One operator states plainly that nobody lands on Isla Martillo at any point and the birds are watched from the boat a few metres off. Operators also warn that fewer penguins are around at the very start and the very end of the season, so the shoulder weeks give you the least for the time spent.

There are shortcuts over the same stretch of water: some companies drive passengers along the coast to Puerto Almanza or Estancia Harberton and begin the navigation there, which cuts the hours afloat without cutting the day.

The combined bus-and-boat day takes about eight hours

The eastern full day is the longest thing on the water here. One operator's combined trip leaves the Ushuaia tourist pier at 08:30, goes out by bus to Estancia Harberton and comes back by boat, reaching town around 16:30; the 10:30 departure does it the other way round and returns about 18:30. That is about eight hours pier to pier, filled by the road along National Route 3 and Ruta J, the stop at the 1886 estancia, and the crossing to the island.

The land-only version of the penguin walk is 7 hours, checking in at the operator's tourist-pier office at Av. Prefectura Naval 410, then bus or minibus along RN 3 and Ruta Complementaria J, a zodiac crossing of about 15 minutes, roughly one hour among Magellanic and Gentoo penguins with a specialist guide, and a return at sunset. There is no pier on Isla Martillo: you step off the zodiac and use stairs and a gangway, which is why the walk is not suitable for people with reduced mobility and is not recommended in pregnancy.

Dates for that long day: 15 October 2026 to 15 March 2027, with departures six days a week and nothing on a Tuesday. Tuesday is out because Harberton, the land gateway, closes that day, and the estancia's entrance fee sits outside the tour price. Take a day of this length only if walking among the penguins is what you came to Ushuaia for, because much of it is spent on the road.

Morning and afternoon departures from the tourist pier

Take the morning slot. One operator's 3-hour lighthouse cruise runs daily all year with both morning and afternoon departures; another sails the short route at 09:30 and 15:30; the Isla H trip goes at 10:00 and 15:00, and Bridges Islands sailings typically at 09:30 and 15:30. For penguins the pattern is 09:00 and 15:00 on one operator, with the municipal listing giving 09:00 and 15:00 for the sailing without a landing and 14:00 daily for the Harberton-and-colony option.

Seasonal gaps matter more than the exact hour. One operator's penguin cruise opens on 21 October with afternoon departures only and runs morning and afternoon from November to March. One company runs no morning excursions on 25 December or 1 January. Departure times are published by each operator and can change, so reconfirm the day before.

In high summer there are up to 18 hours of daylight, so a 15:30 or 18:00 sailing still has light to work with on deck. Winter gives you about 7 hours of light, which puts the end of an afternoon sailing right on dusk.

Check-in time and a spare day for the weather

Add 30 minutes to whatever duration you have chosen. On the 4-hour navigation listed here you present yourself 30 minutes before the sailing time at the Patagonia Explorer office in the tourist port, on Avenida Prefectura Naval Argentina at Calle Roca, and that half hour is not part of the four hours.

Build one spare day into the stay. Cancellations of channel sailings are announced officially by the Prefectura Naval Argentina; otherwise boats leave on schedule. Pier operators advise putting the navigation early in your trip so a weather day still leaves room to sail later, which matters more than choosing between a 3-hour and a 4-hour itinerary. Sun, rain and snow can all turn up in one day, with cold and wind constant and an annual average around 6°C.

Questions people ask

Can I fit a channel sailing and Tierra del Fuego National Park into the same day?

Yes, if you take a short sailing in the afternoon slot and the park in the morning. The 5 to 6 hour penguin cruises and the penguin-walk days leave no room for it. None of those hours covers the park gate, which is paid separately: the tariff valid from 1 June 2026 is AR$40.000 general, AR$18.000 for Argentine nationals, AR$12.000 for students and AR$8.000 for provincial residents, while under-7s and retirees holding Argentine DNI are exempt.

Are there Beagle Channel trips longer than one day?

Licensed companies run cross-channel trips from Ushuaia to Puerto Williams in Chile, normally sailing out one day and returning the next, which makes it an overnight rather than an excursion. Formalities at the Puerto de Ushuaia border post are handled by Argentine immigration around the clock, so the hour of sailing is not the constraint. Passenger traffic across the water restarted with the landing ramp at Puerto Navarino, some 45 km by road from Puerto Williams.

How long is the walk with the penguins itself?

One hour, with a specialist guide, according to the operator that states it is the only one authorised to walk with the penguins. On the 7-hour land version that hour sits between a road transfer and a zodiac crossing of about 15 minutes, with a sunset return. That hour is rationed too: the island is a protected natural reserve where only small groups with professional guides go ashore, which keeps the number of places limited.

Does adding the End of the World Train stretch the day much?

It takes most of a morning. From Estación Fin del Mundo, on National Route 3 at Km 3065 and about 8 km out of the centre, the return ride takes 1 hour 50 minutes, roughly 20 minutes of it the stop at La Macarena. Allow 45 minutes for check-in before the departure you pick: 9:30, 12:00 or 15:00 between 1 September and 30 April, 9:45, 12:15 or 15:00 between 1 May and 31 August. The national park fee is separate from the ticket.

Do durations change in winter?

The short lighthouse route keeps running daily through the year, with the same stated length. What can change is the landing: one operator notes it may be cancelled for safety when there is ice or frost. With about 7 hours of daylight and averages of 1°C to 6°C, the morning sailing is the one to take in winter.
